of Federal Criminal Defense Seminars

The Administrative Office of the United States Courts (AO), Defender Services Office, Training Division (DSOTD) is pleased to announce that registration is now open for the Winning Strategies and Fundamentals of Federal Criminal Defense Seminars. The seminars will be held June 8-10, 2017 in Houston, Texas, where a very favorable hotel rate has been obtained.

 

The seminar is designed for, and attendance is limited to Criminal Justice Act (CJA) practitioners, both panel attorneys and federal defender staff. There is no tuition, and materials will be provided to participants free of charge. The Winning Strategies seminar will begin Thursday morning, June 8th and end by mid-day on Saturday the 10th. The Fundamentals of Federal Criminal Defense seminar will begin Thursday morning, June 8th and end early afternoon on Friday the 9th. Fundamentals attendees are invited and encouraged to attend the remainder of the Winning Strategies program. A limited amount of financial assistance is available to qualifying CJA panel attorneys to cover a portion of travel costs. The Fundamentals program, which takes place June 8-9, 2017, is designed as an overview for new federal CJA practitioners. This program addresses topics which are essential to defending clients in federal criminal cases, including discovery issues, plea negotiations, sentencing guidelines issues, and more. A draft agenda is attached and available on fd.org.

 

The Winning Strategies Seminar, which is June 8-10, 2017, brings together a dynamic group of faculty who address a wide variety of topics specifically designed to keep panel attorneys abreast of the most recent and important developments in federal criminal defense. The program includes both large plenary lectures as well as smaller "break-out" lectures, covering topics that meet the needs of the advanced practitioner and the less experienced attorney alike. Sessions will include such subjects as developing immigration trends, recurring issues in drug and gun cases, Supreme Court update, jury bias, sentencing, ethics and more. Continuing Legal Education (CLE) accreditation for this program will be sought in all applicable jurisdictions.
