Persuasive Writing Workshop

August 13-15, 2018
Los Angeles, California

The Defender Services Office, Training Division (DSO-TD) is pleased to announce that registration is now open for its Persuasive Writing Workshop.

This program is a skills-based workshop during which participants work on one of their own cases, and learn how to use fact-busting and principles of storytelling and persuasion to integrate the facts of a case in a persuasive manner with relevant legal principles, both in appeals and at trial. This program is open to CJA panel attorneys and federal defender staff. Enrollment for this program is limited to 36 participants – priority will be given to those people who not attended this workshop in the past. Early registration is encouraged; after the enrollment limit is met, the workshop goes into wait-list status.

Here are some participant comments from last year’s workshop:

“I am very happy that I was able to participate in the workshop. My writing has certainly been improved because of the information I gained from the facilitators and speakers.”

The faculty was “excellent” and allowed us to “take our work product home and have an almost completed argument. This is probably one of the best CLE seminars I have ever attended.”

“Amazing!!! Great tips to take away and use today.”

“Some of what the facilitators and speakers suggested pulled me out of my comfort zone, but that’s why I came to the workshop.”

There is no tuition, and materials will be provided to participants free of charge. The program will begin Monday morning, August 13, and end around 4:00 p.m. on Wednesday, August 15.

Limited financial assistance may be available to qualifying CJA panel attorney registrants for travel-related expenses. A draft agenda and a financial assistance application are  available on the training events page of Interested persons can register through, or by clicking on the URL below.
